Michael Robert Holten was born March 10, 1974 in Portland to Robert and Mary (Claussen) Holten, and passed away suddenly and too soon in West Linn on August 7, 2017, at the age of 43.

Mike was the third of four children. He was a 1992 graduate of Central Catholic High School. On February 19, 1997 he married Efrosinia Kalugin in Reno. Mike was fascinated by her Russian heritage, and spent a lot of time trying to learn Russian (even buying the Rosetta Stone materials), but he never quite got the hang of it.

His first job was at Sandy's Camera, and he worked at Home Depot for over twenty years, eventually becoming a manager. He had earned an Associate's degree (with a perfect 4.0) from Clackamas Community College and, having been accepted to Portland State University, was planning to attend PSU to study business.

Mike loved his family and was always playful and protective of them, particularly his daughter and nieces, and had funny pet names for everyone. He had an odd and interesting sense of humor - always the one to bring a gag gift or create the most inappropriate Christmas tree ornament (and there was competition!). He was a huge fan of A Christmas Story, could quote every line, and even purchased the "leg lamp" seen in the film. All things Star Wars and Disney also earned much of his time and attention. Mike was scrupulous about his cooking: He would "watch food" on the Food Network and then spend a great deal of time finding the exact spices and ingredients to recreate those dishes. The Fourth of July was a big cooking occasion for him. He wasn't a big sports fan, but he did enjoy playing poker, being out on his jet ski, and especially skydiving. He had made many dozens of jumps and been officially certified.

Years ago, Mike started going to Loon Lake with his best friend, Kathy "Uncle Kathlee" Walkemeyer and her family, and eventually his wife's family and his own would all look forward to their annual summer trips, getting up in the wee hours on the first day they could reserve camping spaces to be sure they got their favorite spot at the lake.

Mike was preceded in death in June by his beloved brother Jeffrey Holten.

A memorial service will take place on Thursday, August 17 at 12:00 pm at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home, 11801 SE Mt. Scott Blvd. in Portland. At his request, Mike will be cremated and privately laid to rest near his brother Jeff.
