Shirley Janet Bighouse was born November 7, 1936 in Anamoose, North Dakota to Peter and Mary Bighouse. The family moved to Portland, Oregon when Shirley was a young girl where she attended Grout Elementary School and graduated from Cleveland High School. Shirley started working at the age of 18, always impeccably dressed, Shirley would shine as a classy, tough, intelligent businesswoman, a career at Consolidated Freightways Trucking Company, would span for many decades. On July 3, 1968 Shirley exchanged wedding vows with Gary Colt in the Moreland Presbyterian Church in Portland; they honeymooned in Hawaii which would start her love of travel.
Some of their memorable trips were to Germany, Singapore and again to Hawaii for Shirley. Shirley's love for her family and devotion to her sisters would create many happy memories as the sisters would travel by car or train on numerous fun loving road trips back to North Dakota where Shirley would purchase a second home and spend many vacations.
Shirley was an animal lover and rescued her two beloved dogs "Rags" and "Ruffles" who joined her small menagerie of cats. In her free time, her excitement for basketball was evident by season tickets that she and her husband held to the Portland Trailblazer's basketball games for many years; this would be a sport that Shirley followed her entire life.
In the year 2000 Shirley and her husband Gary would make the decision to move from Portland to Sunriver, Oregon where her adventures really began. Shirley loved to take long walks, hiking, bicycling cross country skiing and even ice-skating. Her friends were very important to her and she would spend time enjoying these activities with them. An end to a perfect evening for Shirley would be a Tanqueray martini up with a twist!
In 2013 after the death of her husband Gary, Shirley would move back to Portland to be closer to her family. Shirley passed away June 9, 2017, peacefully at her home. Shirley is preceded in death by her husband Gary, survived by sisters Dorothy and Arlene; and numerous nieces and nephews. She will be remembered fondly for her beautifully perfect spirit, happiness, grace, fun loving attitude, generosity, compassion and love of family. She was a wonderful wife, sister and aunt.
